I am a Filipino! Hahahah, yeah that was funny. Okay, about the topic. (Though, you’ve answered your question…) Yup, it wasn’t Ferdinand Magellan who completely circumnavigated. It was Juan Sebastián Elcano who really completed the journey.

(Are you really asking or just giving a trivia? You already answered your question. Duh?)

    Probably neither Magellan nor Elcano.

"The 18 survivors of Ferdinand Magellan’s expedition, 1519–1522, in the Victoria. After Magellan’s death, the circumnavigation was completed under the command of Juan Sebastián Elcano who returned to Seville on 8 September 1522 after a journey of 3 years and 1 month. They were the first to round the world in a single expedition. Since several of the survivors had been born in the Far East or previously been there, it is probable that the first person to actually circumnavigate was one of the other survivors."

Juan Sebastian Elecano, and the 18 survivors of the ill-fated Magellan Expedition, in the Victoria. But the mission was not considered a success.

The first, planned and successful (though costly) circumnavigation was completed by Vice-Admiral Francis Drake, RN. in 1580. 2nd Cousin of Sir John Hawkins.

England and Spain were engaged in an ‘unofficial’ naval war from 1560, until 1604.

In 1577, Queen Elizabeth I put (the then) Capitan Drake in charge of a fleet of 6 warships, the Pelican (flagship) , the Christopher, the Elizabeth, the Benedict, the Marigold, and the Swan, and 164 crewmen. She then ordered Drake to deploy the Fleet in combat operations against any and all Spanish ships they could make contact with, along the Pacific Coast of the Americas. Before their departure, a 6th ship, the Mary (a captured Spanish ship formerly known as the Santa Maria) was added to the Fleet.

After one false start due to bad weather, they deployed from Plymouth, England on Dec. 13, 1577. The voyage had a very high atttrition rate. Both the Christopher and Swan had to be scuttled before they even reached the Pacific Ocean, due to losing so many crewman that they did not have the minimum number of crew required to operate the two vessels. They had to put in at San Julian, Patagonia, Argentina because the wood on the Mary was so rotten, she was no longer sea-worthy, and had to be burned.

They wisely stayed the winter of 1578 in San Julian to effect repairs, rest the crew, and take care of the Court-Martial, and Execution of Capt. Thomas Dougherty, for attempted Mutiny, and Treason.

The 4 remaining ships, Pelican, now re-named the Golden Hind, the Benidict, the Elizabeth and the Marigold resumed their deployment in July, 1578 (remember, they were below the Equator, so the seasons were reversed). They made it through the Straits of Magellan and into the Pacific by September, but at a great cost. Violent storms had destroyed one ship, and damaged two more so severly that they had to return to England, leaving only the Golden Hind to complete their mission.

He sailed north, along the South American Coast, attacking Spanish shipping, shelling forts, ports and fortifications, and raiding Spanish towns. He was very successful, sacking the Chilean port of Valparaiso, and exposing the Spanish operations in the Orient, which caused Phillip II of Spain to have to invade Portugal and seize the crown, to legalize it. The Vatican had only given permission to Portugal to trade in the orient. Drake and his crew caused havoc for the Spanish all the way up to Spains northern-most presence: Point Loma, near present day San Diego, Ca., in what would become the Uniited States.

Drake continued north, mapping the coastline of the Northwestern U.S., British Columbia, Alaska, and the Aleutian Islands, finally having to turn back due to to freezing weather and dangerous ice-flows. This was considered classified by Queen Elizabeth, and was a major military secret for several decades.

Drake then set course south, and west, through Indonesia, the west coast of Africa, through the Cape of Good Hope, finally reaching his starting point of Plymouth, England on 26 September , 1580, with 1 remaining battered ship, and 59 surviving crewmen. Drake had been so successful that the Queens half of the captured booty was more than the entire crowns other income for that year.

Needless to say, Drake was Knighted (though not by the Queen, but by a french Nobleman named Monsieur de Marchaumont), on 4 April 1581. In September 1581, he became the Mayor of Plymouth. He was also a Member of Parliament in 1581, for an unknown constituency, and again in 1584 for Bossiney. He eventually purchased Buckland Abbey, in Devon.

When war broke out again between Spain and England in 1585, Drake was made a Vice-Admiral and was instrumental in the total defeat of the entire Spanish Armada.

In 1596, he died of dysentery, at age 56 while anchored off the coast of Puerto Bello, Panama where some Spanish treasure ships had sought shelter. He was buried at sea in a lead coffin, near Portobelo.

They are all wrong. It was a slave called Henry the Black or Enrique Of Malacca. He was kidnapped from the Malays in south-east Asia, transported to Portugal and made part of the crew. He jumped ship in the Phillipines and made his way home thus becoming the first person to circumnavigate the globe before the rest of the crew reached their final destination.
