Pulled up the Guardian for comparison with the diver and that Guardian thing, my friend, was one fugly airplane. :-0
I’ll bet Donald Douglas is still red faced with embarrassment in his grave over that one.

Right, SB2C-4 diver.
Just taken a blueprint and a quick comparison with this one in the vid.
Landing gear doors, slats, rounded rudder/fin, air intake on the nose, match.

Weeping Jesus on a …
Weeping Jesus on a Cross, that ain’t a Grumman Guardian, its a Curtiss diver. Gaurdian had a three place pit with a three piece plexiglass canopy, more squared off vertical stabilizer and”winglets” on the horizontal stabilizer.
The aircraft in the vid has a two place pit (pilot front and gunner aft) with a “greenhouse” type canopy, no “winglets” and the vertical stabilizer is much more rounded off than the Guardian, definitely a diver.

Really?
Because …
Really?
Because looking at the shape, it looked like a divebomber. And Last time I checked, USA had only 3 divebombers:
Vindicator
Dauntless
Helldiver
So I just went with whatever it looked like the most.

Not an SBD. That is …
Not an SBD. That is a Grumman AF Guardian, which was operational very soon after the War. You can see that the nose is longer, the prop has a larger, flatter spinner, and the tail’s trailing edge is more rounded and vertical than on the SBD. Plus, the AF is a bigger aircraft.

Was a nightmare, …
Was a nightmare, expecially if the aircraft wasn’t in good shape after a dogfight.
Winds, the carrier moving up and down, and those 2ww aircraft are taildragger with this huge nose they have poor front visibility.
It’s a risky business, even today, i can’t figure out land on a deck, during a rainy night. O_O
Scary.

USS Hancock, 14 July 1955
He didn’t survive, the canopy when off but he sunk trapped in it’s seat.
2 crew members lost their lives due to the burning jet fuel on the side walkway.
