Who’s To Blame

Wednesday, April 7th, 2010

“Those who fail to reach the heights described by Maslow may feel they are personally to blame for their discontent…The individualization of success and failure can result in blaming those who suffer from social injustice for the hardships they face. (Pearson & Podeschi, 1999)
I disagree with this statement as well. I do not doubt that there may be those individuals who blame themselves for the circumstances of their lives. However, this is not Maslow’s doing. If a person desires to blame someone for his perceived shortcoming, whatever it may be, he is in my opinion missing two vital elements to becoming self-actualized.

A New Higher Way of Thinking

Wednesday, April 7th, 2010

The same is true of our various ways of thinking. When we are introduced to a new and higher level of thinking, we way the alternatives and if the new level is better, we accommodate that new weigh of thinking so that we may better understand our environment. It is important to note the four distinct mechanisms that cause an accommodation change. These include environmental interaction, social transmission, maturation and equilibration. Environmental interaction involves just what its name implies. Active involvement with the environment allows us to make new distinctions and judgments about our existing knowledge. What do you think about that?

The Two Visions of America

Wednesday, April 7th, 2010

As noted earlier, the same individual values that Huntington speaks of are the same values that allowed hundreds of thousands of American Indians to be slaughtered and allowed hundreds of thousands of blacks to be lynched. Who Are We?, presents a very compelling argument however, it ignores what Paul Harvey calls, “the rest of the story.” Huntington himself speaks about the two visions of the same America when he illustrates the contrasting views of America as seen by two poets, Maya Angelou and Robert Frost. “Frost saw America’s history and identity as glories to be celebrated and perpetuated. Manifestations of An American Identity

Wednesday, April 7th, 2010

Angelou saw the manifestations of American identity as evil threats to the well-being and real identities of people with sub national groups.” (Huntington, 2004) Though seemingly contradictory, both Huntington and Losurdo agree that America is one of the most religious nations on the earth however, they differ in their view of how this relates to American action at home and abroad over its history.
After reading both the Huntington book and the book by James W. Loewen, Lies My Teacher Told Me, I am of the opinion that both books should be read in conjunction with one another. Though Huntington presents both sides of the issue when it comes to America success and moral failures, I do believe that he does not fully address the obvious conflict in his argument with the reality of American intervention at home and abroad.

A Moral Imperative

Wednesday, April 7th, 2010

According to Mann, the Christianity of which he speaks will never be achieved, until “private morals are brought into closer approximation to the standards of the Gospel.”
In stark contrast to the ideas of Mann, Domenico Losurdo, in his article entitled, “Preemptive War, Americanism, and Anti-Americanism” presents a different view of the Christian worldview. These nations seem to be driven by a moral imperative to attempt to civilize “the mass of ‘savages and barbarians,’ essentially the uncivilizable and the incorrigibly hostile to civilization.” Losurdo takes the same information that both Mann and Huntington use to fuel their argument about what makes American culture and values wonderful and presents a perspective that at times openly scoffs at the former.

I Am In Love With This Country

Wednesday, April 7th, 2010

As an American, I am in love with this country and its ideals. However, with that said, these readings have opened my eyes to the reality of what has been kept hidden. I am personally much more motivated than I ever have been to identify the story behind the words that I have been told for so long. For me I think an important fact that I learned was that it is not necessarily, what is said that is important but rather what is not said. As in the beginning of this paper, I find myself torn between the two alternatives of presenting the American student with the full story or allow them to continue down the road of half-truths and misinterpretations.

The teaching of clergy by way of making seminaries

Tuesday, April 6th, 2010

The organization of modern seminary establishments was a unquestioning event of Roman Catholic reforms of the Counter-Reformation after the Council of Trent. This reform took a firm stand on the enrichment of the teaching of clergy by way of making seminaries as live-in institutions which would be below the implicit hold of ranking clergy. The creation of minor seminaries to school young boys for the priesthood accompanied this initial movement. A Christian Degree model called the Tridentine was that of a living in monastic community where lifestyle and entreaty were closely monitored and corrected as a means to reclaiming pre-Reformation ill-treatment among the clergy.

Dog owners can be held liable for the attack

Friday, April 2nd, 2010

Washington State has a “strict liability statute” when it comes to dog attacks. This means that dog owners whose animals attack and injure another person can be held liable for the actions of their pets – irrespective of whether they were aware of their animals’ prior viciousness. The only exception to this law is when a dog attacks someone who is trespassing or trying to commit a crime on the owner’s property. Dog bite victims may seek compensation to cover the cost of medical expenses, cosmetic surgery, psychological therapy and other related expenses.
