Original Wedding-Wedding Etiquette

On their golden wedding anniversary, for example, they invited practically everyone they knew. Me and my siblings were convinced that it was probably a bigger crowd that had attended their original wedding. We were all expected to get them anniversary presents with the extravagance of wedding gifts, and if anyone was foolish enough to not buy something nice, they certainly would be out of the loop for the next six months.

When we married, I assumed that we would never have that type of attitude towards her wedding anniversaries. You see, the way the world looked to me when I was young, what mattered was living your life every day. Big events, anniversaries, and historical dates aren’t that important.

Success Goes Where the Funding Goes

Tuesday, April 13th, 2010

The idea that schools which receive fewer funding dollars and are located in poor inner cities are just not equipped to adequately educate students in the new economy is quite striking. According to Hochschild, these schools have fewer certified capable teachers, and access to few if any state of the art technologically capable classrooms. The question becomes how can students effectively compete with others on state or national exams when the tools that both need to excel are unequally distributed? Another idea Hochschild brings to the forefront is that of the social issues that go with the poor status. What do you think about this?

Hard Work and Personal Sacrafice

Friday, April 9th, 2010

Many realize that it is only their commitment to hard work and personal sacrifice that will elevate them to their previous status.
In contrary to what you might hear from a straight-lacer, immigrants understand that success in this country is linked to work and contribution. Imagine, two sisters, one husband, and ten (10) kids constantly moving from place to place finally finding themselves all living in a trailer and working in the fields of California. Do you believe this is the life they desire for their children’s children to have?

The Importance of Carefully Guided Research

Friday, April 9th, 2010

If the research is not carefully guided, we have no way of knowing what one person considers stigmatizing. In addition, it would be nice to match the ads with the questionnaire to check the accuracy of the questionnaire responses. Do these responses match the criteria we set? Do they match the ad copy?
12. Yes, they can and should be avoided in future research. The fact that most of the ad writers were male is an example of how the results might be biased. There was no distinction in what the motivating factors were, of why men and women place personal ads. Do they place them for the same reasons? The sample size was incredibly small and the results might be specific that one area of the country, city, or newspaper.

Silent But Deadly

Thursday, April 8th, 2010

Wolf states in her article, “Or else she hears about white people talking about the racism of institutions – such as the police department, or the FBI…” This statement as well as many others serves as the next level of white privilege and that is the ability to see a problem affecting another and rather than being compelled to act, you are compelled to pontificate. The general consensus is that there is an increasing awareness of white privilege however decisive action has not been implemented by enough citizens to rest just yet. Ancis and Szymanski quote a student who makes a brilliant observation which states, “Whites don’t look at it or acknowledge it because deep within our hearts, somewhere – silently we are glad it exists.”
