How can I find the Kinetic Energy of an element based system?

Wednesday, December 16th, 2009

The system has 5 elements, each element has different kinetic energy.
Some of the elements may have rotational movement at one end and different rectilinear motion at the other end. How can I combined the two?

add them up. energy is a scalar, so it adds easily.

Kinetic Energy in J if m is in kg and V is in m/s
KE = ½mV²

Angular kinetic energy K in Joules
K = ½Iω²
ω is angular velocity in radians/sec
I is moment of inertia
I = cMR²
M is mass, R is radius
c = 1 for a ring or cylinder
c = 2/5 solid sphere
C = 1/2 solid cylinder or disk around its center

Are there any tricks to connecting my Garmin nuvi 200w to the satellites?

Wednesday, December 16th, 2009

I recently bought a Garmin nuvi 200w off ebay and didn’t read until afterwards that it takes FOREVER to connect to satellites. I got it and this is the case. Since a lot of people have experienced this and expressed it, I was wondering if there were any ways or tricks to get it connected. I thought maybe turn it on like ten minutes before leaving or something like that. Please help, it’s a christmas present and I don’t want to disappoint someone.

The speed of connection to the satellites will depend on the location of the unit, and the availability of clear access to the sky. If you are in a house or parking garage, it will take longer to locate than if you are in an open field. It also will take longer if the unit is a long distance from the last found location, because it will need to reset itself.

Try the unit in an open area, with a clear view of the sky. Buildings, trees, mountains, and other obstructions can cause problems. After it finds the location, it should be able to re-locate itself after being turned off.

How does water evaporate from a sealed snow globe?

Wednesday, December 16th, 2009

Many years ago, someone gave me a Precious Moments snow globe with a little figurine inside. The water used to be up to the top, now it’s about a quarter of the way down. It’s sealed and does not leak. How in the world did the water evaporate through the plastic??

Through humidity changes inside the globe.

What are good beggining freestyle ski tricks?

Monday, December 14th, 2009

Well, I just started to get into freestyle skiing, so I was wondering what are some good basic freestyle ski tricks to learn first? I want to try everything, park, rails, half-pipe. So if someone could give a little information on where to start, and some good beginning tricks that would be great! Thanks! Also, if you could even give me some other helpful tips that aren’t about tricks, but what to look out for, or what to do, then that would also be really helpful.

Freestyle skiing is great, aslong as you dont do tricks that you are not ready for. I have many friends that have broken bones doing crazy tricks. I would reccomend starting out just hitting jumps going pretty fast, and try to get some air. Once you have done that, try a 180 when ou think you are ready…..Using twin-tip Skis, look to your left or right (whichever side you plan to rotate) as you take off. Bear in mind that you will land backwards. Spot your landing and keep your weight centered. Do not turn forward after you stomp at the landing. You are probobly going to fall the first few times you try, but this doesnt mean that you can not do it. Maybe you could also try some time of trick where you put your skis back and brab them. HOPE THAT HELPED!

Why buy an aqua globe when you can just use a turkey baster upside down?

Monday, December 14th, 2009

I have been doing this for weeks and it’s been working fine! Why waste twenty bucks on an aqua globe when you can just go to the dollar store and buy twenty basters? It loads easier and it’s cheaper. Does anyone else think this is a good idea, my plants are going great with my turkey baster! I am going to decorate one for my Grandma, I know she will love it better than some hard to fill globe.

Well the aqua globes are so expensive because their blown glass and made to be decorative. Good to know there is an alternative- I might try that idea.

What are some tricks that help you remember how to conjugate a verb IN FRENCH?

Friday, December 11th, 2009

So i have a test coming up and my french teacher is really mean and thinks that we are all stupid so i wanna get 100% so what are some tricks that help you conjugate a verb in french? I don’t understand it but she wont explain it to us! Please help!

french verbs can be classified into three groups :

1st group : verbs ending with er (also called regular verbs)
2nd group : verbs with participe present ending with "issant" like finir (en finissant)
3rd group : whichever verb that doesn’t belong to the first two groups

1st group (the easiest and most common french verbs)
present simple : you keep the verb (without er) and add : e, es, e, ons, ez, ent like chanter : je chantE, tu chantES, il chantE, nous chantONS, vous chantEZ, ils chantENT
futur : you keep the verb and add, ai, as, a, ons, ez, ont : je chanterAI, tu chanterAS, il chanterA, nous chanterONS, vous chanterEZ, ils chnaterONT
imparfait : you keep the verb (without er) and add ais, ais, ait, ions, iez, aient : je chantAIS, tu chantAIS, il chantAIT, nous chantIONS, vous chantIEZ, ils chantAIENT
passé simple : you keep the verb without er and add ai, as, a, âmes, âtes, èrent : je chantAI, tu chantAS, il chantA, nous chantÂMES, vous chantÂTES, ils chantèRENT.

of course there are always some exceptions to the rule like Aller :
present simple : je vais, tu vas, il va, nous allons, vous allez, ils vont
imparfait : j’allais, tu allais, il allait, nous allions, vous alliez, ils allaient
passé simple : j’allai, tu allas, il alla, nous allâmes, vous allâtes, ils allèrent
futur : j’irai, tu iras, il ira, nous irons, vous irez, ils iront

for the verbs belonging to the second and third groups, you need to learn them by heart.

What types of ordiments, figurines, or material can I use inside a homemade snow globe?

Friday, December 11th, 2009

I plan on making a homemade snow globe as an arts and craft project, and I’ve read that I want ornaments–Christmas ones–to put inside, but I don’t know if the paint can sustain itself in the liquid for very long. Does anyone on Yahoo! answers know what I can use? I’d much rather make my own figurine, but if not, does anyone else know where I can buy unique ones other than them being Christmas related?

You might want to read several of the categories on this page at my site about making your own snowglobes:
http://glassattic.com/polymer/outdoor_snowglobes_fountains.htm (first half of the page)

My whole site is primarily about using polymer clay (and this page about using polymer clay inside snowglobes, etc.) but that page will also cover other things too.

As for "ornaments" to put inside the snowglobes, I assume you mean little figures and items, not fabric or glass ball ornaments, etc. Most of those little figures & items will be fine but some of the paints or regular glitters, etc, could bleed over time, and some metals could rust… and anything you use will need to be waterproof (glass, metal, plastic).

How can I stop my figure skates from coming loose while skating?

Friday, December 11th, 2009

I have been figure skating for almost 13 years, but lately my skates won’t stay done up tight during practice. I even have calluses and blisters on my hands from pulling too tight, but i still can’t get them tight enough. Any ideas on what I can do? I need help! Its driving me crazy!

i asked my coach that question because mine always get loose and she said it was the laces and that i needed to get new ones. so i did and now they always stay tight:]] so thats what i would suggest. but make sure you find the longest laces there are and if they are too long you can just cut them.
